Can I renew my passport with UPS?
This question can be viewed a couple different ways: Can I renew my passport at a UPS location? No, as UPS is a for-profit company. You can go to some UPS stores and print off the renewal forms, get a new passport photo taken, and ship everything to the Department of State via USPS (more on that in response 2), but if you need to apply in person for your renewal (i.e., if your passport was issued more than 15 years ago, if your previous passport was damaged or mutilated, or if you were under 16 when it was issued), you need to go to an authorized passport application acceptance facility. The UPS store does not meet the qualifications to be a passport application acceptance facility. Can I ship my renewal paperwork to the Department of State using UPS?No. The passport renewal form goes to a P.O. box. UPS does not deliver to P.O. boxes. Also, even if you could send your renewal application by UPS, how much would it cost? You can find out by using a shipping estimate tool on the UPS Store website. If I were to send my renewal paperwork to Philadelphia (where renewals are supposed to go, according to the DS-82), it would cost me around $23.54 for second day air. Compare that to $7.35 for a nearly identical USPS priority mail flat rate envelope that will get there in the same amount of time. So, really, it wouldnt even make sense to send your application via UPS. Heres the good news, though - you dont actually have to go anywhere special to renew your passport! A lot of people think you do. The UPS Store has even promoted its own passport renewal services, but really, that just consists of taking a passport photo and printing out some forms. You can print the forms yourself - for free - with an internet connection and a printer, and you can get photos taken at Walgreens, CVS, the UPS Store, Kinkos, AAA, and countless other places. Renewing a passport is very, very simple. Dont make it harder than it needs to be.
